How it works
What is a matrix MLM plan?
A matrix MLM plan, also called a forced matrix, limits how many members each person can have on their first level (the width) and how many levels deep commission is paid (the depth). It is written as width × depth, so a 3×3 matrix has three positions on the first level and pays three levels down. Once a level is full, new joiners spill over into the next open position.

In numbers
A worked example
A 3×3 matrix paying ₹50, ₹30 and ₹20 for each member placed on levels 1, 2 and 3. The figures are illustrative.
- Level 1 holds 3 members, level 2 holds 9 (3 × 3) and level 3 holds 27 (9 × 3), so the matrix has 39 positions.
- When the member sponsors a fourth person, level 1 is already full, so that person spills over into the first open position on level 2.
- A completed matrix pays 3 × ₹50 + 9 × ₹30 + 27 × ₹20, which is ₹150 + ₹270 + ₹540 = ₹960.
- On completion the plan may add a completion bonus and re-enter the member into a new matrix.
The placement order, usually left to right and one level at a time, has to be fixed in the plan, because it decides who receives every spillover.

Matrix MLM Plan questions
The first number is the width, the number of positions directly under each member. The second is the depth, the number of levels commission is paid on. A 3×3 matrix has 3 positions on level 1, 9 on level 2 and 27 on level 3, so 39 in all. Any width and depth can be configured, such as 5×5 or 4×7.
Once a member's first level is full, anyone else they sponsor is placed in the next open position below them, usually filled left to right, one level at a time. Members can therefore gain downline they did not recruit, from the sponsors above them.
It depends on the plan. Common options are a one-time completion bonus, automatic re-entry into a new matrix of the same size (often called recycling), or moving up to a larger matrix with higher commissions.
A binary plan is two positions wide with unlimited depth, and pays on volume matched between the two legs. A matrix has a fixed width and depth, and pays a set commission or percentage on each level. Binary rewards balanced legs; a matrix rewards filled positions.
